NHTSA has withdrawn this first-porposed-in-2012 requirement b/c manufacturers are already doing it.

SEMA summary:
By Washington, D.C., Staff
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has withdrawn a proposed rule to require event data recorders (EDR) in all new cars and trucks since they are already being voluntarily installed by automakers in nearly all light-duty vehicles.
NHTSA had proposed the rule in 2012 when many vehicles did not have so-called black boxes. NHTSA already has a standard for performance requirements for EDRs, 49 CFR Part 563. Data collected can identify pre-crash vehicle speed and whether brakes were applied and air bags deployed.
A 2015 law requires NHTSA to consider updating the pre-crash data being collected.

So I looked it up NHTSA 49 CFR 563 to see what NHTSA would have required and that OEMs are already doing ... a lot more than I thought would be included!!

NHTSA 49 CFR 563 to see what measurements would be recorded (:faint:) -- you can almost divine the highly-technical battle-of-the-experts scenarios that will be happening in courts throughout the land for everything from severe accidents and homicides to DWI defenses and virtually any physical damage to a human being beyond bruises or property damage beyond destroyed picket fences

This does seem like overkill, but the information is already there and what is recorded is already subpoena-able so I guess it was inevitable to make it all recorded and in a standardized way. Sort of scary!

I don't see any recording of steering stabilizer position.

That box has nothing to do with safety. Its to screw you in court. Thats why car companies put them in cars. It covers there ass. The government gave them permission to do it.

All of that sensor info has been available as part of overall vehicle management for years now. What's new is standardizing it and thereby potentially making it more easily 'accessible' to court proceedings and potential abuse. Previously you had to get a court order before Ford would have a rep 'deep scan' for such pre-crash information (dealer cannot access it). What about after Sept? I'm sure legal/civil rights are not any different, but just making it all available in a standardized way will inevitably permit precedent-setting cases to eventually draw a legal line on what constitutes necessary vs unnecessary -- not necessarily a bad thing with a conservative SCOTUS in place, but you know some case will eventually wind up there.

There seems to be nothing the government will stop at to know everything about you. Even you refrigerator can spy on you.

Yeah, some new ones have six cameras ...so you can check on what's in side from the supermarket on your smart phone

I guess you if you can't find little Johnny you can use your smartphone to see if he's in the refrig :haha:
