...so popular that Ford is having to put Wayne plant into massive overtime to try to keep up with demand...
---
Ford's new Ranger midsize pickup is proving wildly popular, good news for the struggling company and for UAW workers.
Bloomberg reported that the company will schedule “massive overtime” (https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-01-30/ford-plans-massive-overtime-at-ranger-factory-to-meet-demand) to meet demand for the truck, which went on sale this month.
The report said that Kumar Galhotra, president of Ford's North American operations, said Ford has sold about 1,200 of the trucks in their first two weeks on dealer lots, and has "expressions of interest from 300,000 online shoppers."
“The demand is going to be so strong, that starting in February, just in a few days, our Wayne Assembly Plant where this product is made will be going into massive overtime,” Galhotra said, referring to a factory in suburban Detroit.

They should never have abandoned that market segment.

I agree.
The main problem was the old Rangers, though bulletproof little trucks that got great mileage were thoroughly unprofitable at the bottom end (base model, short bed 4-bangers) and that's what had to produce to sell them because few wanted the loaded ones..
I've read analyses of the small truck business back then saying that for the final several years of productions Ford lost $98/unit overall ...even though demand was still strong they could not move the upscale units. In 1992 you could buy a base Ranger for around $8K (actual).
Heck, MSRP on a 1992 Styleside was only $10,147 and no one paid anywhere near that. My loaded XLT 4x4 4.0 x-cab w/electronic and 2-speed xfer case, cloth buckets, console, stereo and alloy wheels and towing sold to the original owner (and engineer -- I am second owner) for under $14.nK ...only thing it didn't have was A/C (optional -lol).
I think Ford and GM had to get out to let everyone forget about what small trucks sold for :rofl3:

Some clever new packaging for Ranger ...FX2.
Essentially an off-road styled 2WD package with locking diff and some other tweaks but targeting the urban owner who doesn't need 4WD but wants the sporty styling -- clever ...and cheap at $595!
Link to today's media release. (https://media.ford.com/content/fordmedia/fna/us/en/news/2019/08/13/ford-sporty-ranger-fx2-package.html)..
Surprising, as it does not come in Mens.
