This is not just automotive but is the most concise summary of the "economic nexus" state-by-state definitions and policy thresholds for remote sales tax collection rulings that recently went into effect nationwide as a result of SCOTUS' 2018 decision...

Brick and motor shops complained because Amazon didn't have to charge 10% tax like in my town so that is the reason they could sell so cheap. Walmart buys cheap stuff from China so they can compete with Amazon directly and Walmart is everywhere already. The problem comes is that every county in Ca. has a different tax rate. We don't just pay a straight state tax. there are these pesky 1/4% for this and that. and that crap is hard for online sellers to keep track of. even small sellers online have a hard time figuring how much tax to collect then they have to send a check for said tax to the correct state. What a mess.

NY is like that too ...every county and sometimes each city too :faint: ...it's nuts!

Platforms like Amazon, eBay, etc do now collect sales tax were applicable. EBay is weird tho. THEY actually collect the tax -- a single eBay individual accounts for it. So applicable sales actually involve 2 transactions: 1 for the product(s) + shipping, and 1 for the tax. Refunds also involve 2 separate refunds now.

At least small/hobby sellers are now out from under the ridiculous cloud of uncertainty that's been over them for so long as long as they don't trip the #sales/revenue thresholds for any states they sell into (aside from their own) -- so seemingly no change for them -- but all still have to deal with their own state's tax jurisdiction craziness -lol- like in CA and NY ...and maybe some others too.
