Head down to Wichita for the day. I've got a buddy down there who is not enjoying Kansas very much. I think he needs to go shoot up some paper targets.

No, we were looking for different cars. Couple of guys I went with had a Mystic Cobra and a 68 Chevelle. Shows here have the same cars most of the time. Just wanted to see what was in your area, change of rides. It must have been a good turn out, they had to increase the area because there was not enough room for all the cars. I plan on being back next month.

...that's cool! How does it disengage? Do you just turn the knob to disengage the hubs? Do you then have to back-up 10-15' to disengage the front shaft/diff/axles from the transfer case (that's how th Ranger works) or is fully automated now?

The old 4x4 Quadravan was 100% manual.

I haven't tried it, but usually on the newer vehicles putting into neutral usually releases the torque on the shafts and releases the vehicle from 4WD lock.

That's very cool! And if they don't say anything specific in the owners manual on fully disengaging, than that's likely how it works (i.e. no action required).

Tommy Gun
02-13-2012, 02:03 AM
That is a good question then.

I'm now positive how it fully disengages.

On my truck, you just turn it off running down the road. No need to stop or reverse. It just dis-engages, however I think you have to be under 15 mph or something like that. I'm not sure. Just know you don't have to stop.

HSURB®

Gr8snkbite
02-13-2012, 02:11 AM
I only used 4x4 high....was doing 40, turned the knob to it, dash display said shifting to 4x4....after a while, just turned the knob back to 2x4 and the dash said shifting from 4x4.... Barely felt engagement or disengagement.....no driving backwards...all in forward motion at 40 mph...... typically going into 4x4 low requires stopping and going into neutral first, same for disengagement, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it....

68fastback
02-13-2012, 02:52 AM
Awesome!! :tiphat2: ...that's really convenient!

I was just reading the F150 and Raptor owner manuals (on MC site) and they say nothing about exiting 4WD ...that's great!!

HSURB®

On my Ranger I can engage and disengage 4WD while driving, but disengaging only disengages the hubs because shaft engagement is mechanical (even tho there's no lever). You're no longer in 4WD at that point but you're still carrying the whole drivetrain (just not the front wheels). That's why I checked the F150 owners manuals ...sounds like it's entirely electronic now :wtg:

We've only had 5 snowfalls this year -- all 2-4" ...supposed to get 3-10" tonight & tomorrow depending on temps. Haven't used the snowblower once this year but it's all ready -- last year it sucked down 2 - 5 gal cans by now. I'm definately not complaining.

The average water temp at the sensor-station at the tip of Manhattan last year averaged 33*F for Feb -- so far this Feb has averaged 43*F -- weird! We had two manatees in the Hudson river this fall ...way up the Hudson river too ...an extremely rare occurrence -- last manatee siting was 10 years ago and way down river by Manhattan. We've also had quite a few seal sitings on the Hudson up here this past summer ...uncommon tho there's usually a few each year.

Maple sugaring started in late January this year ...usually late Feb or even early march. Geese came back mid Feb and the great blue herons are back on the wetlands. Ice out on the Hudson was about two weeks ago and the woods have almost no snow. What a difference from last year!

Another thing that's weird: we have three streams -- one all-the-time and two intermittant. The two intermittant streams have not gone dry once over the last 2+ years (since late summer of 2009). Usually they go dry for a couple/few week every summer. We'll see what this summer brings.

Watch out for those tornados, Tim!!

That is really sad. I was looking at places to retire (in about 8 years), and Iowa or Missouri came to mind (affordable), but because of all the tornado's they get, I crossed them off the list pretty fast. We had a tornado set down right behind the Shelby garage last August, pretty scary. It killed one man and left a path of destruction. Good thing this area is not very populated, or it could have been worse.

Measured the snow, 19+". Hopefully it melts fast, as the temps are suppose to be in the 30's the next few days. Talked to one of the guys that plows for the town, and he said we won't get plowed until tomorrow, because the other guy is home sick. There is only 2 of them.

We don't get much of a winter here. Usually we're hovering around the high 60's, low 70's this time of the year. Our winter lasts about 2 weeks in total. By July / August we'll be hitting 100

We were both kinda the teachers pet because... we were so far ahead of the class....period! We were so far ahead that the teach would give us extra credit work for homework and we would finish it before leaving class that day.

Seriously, the teach was amazed. Now looking back I know that both of us just had a talent. I could draw ANYTHING! so could he. I think we just had an artist instinct in us that prevailed.

Most of the work was very technical and used higher math that I don't know I could still figure out these days? It just came natural at that time.

Not trying to toot my own horn, but there was a time that I was very very good at something.....and it landed us both very good jobs w/ Architectural firms at the time. Last I heard from him a couple years ago he was working for

2 years ago I tried to hire a lawn service to mow my yard and it was a nightmare. I even agreed to pay them extra to bag the grass and some how they always managed to fill up the rock beds and flower beds with grass clippings or they would show up right after it rained and leave ruts all over the yard. You couldn't complain to anyone because you couldn't find anyone who could speak or understand English. I went through 3 different lawn companies and all 3 of them sucked. It was costing me $100 a week and my house looked like $hit. Last year I decided to do it myself again and it took me all year to fix what those idiots screwed up. By the end of the year my house had that manicured look to it again and I want it to stay that way. It takes me about 3 hours to edge, weed-wack and mow and my reward is the job done right. :beerchug:

I have just a little over an acre and the price I was paying was fair for the area. When I negotiated the work with them the sales person spoke perfect English but when I had a complaint everyone was no comprendi. It was just easier to get rid of them than to deal with them and besides in my neighborhood we speak English.

We're getting 1-3 inches of snow tonight, more salt, sucks. Hopefully in 2 weeks the Shelby can get back on the road.
