Tony's thread got me thinking...I need some advice:

1) My iphone takes photos in HEIC format. I hate that...most of the ways I use photos don't accept that format. I found a free HEIC converter to jpg that works...wondering if a) there is a better one b) am I hurting anything by compressing the pics? c) if I ever need to, can I convert back from jpg to HEIC without consequence? I know that if you're using a photo to be blown up to a large size that you need more pixels to make it sharp...but I never do that...

I have been using this one - > https://softorino.com/heic-converter/

2) Is there a way to tell my iphone to take photos in jpg mode rather than HEIC?

3) How can I set up both Terry's and my phone so that we can each see where the other is by allowing the GPS to be always visible to each others' phones?

4) If I use "OneDrive", does it make a copy of my files and save them on the cloud, or does it MOVE them to the cloud? Also, how do I then access a file such as an Excel file remotely? I have the OneDrive app on my iphone and ipad...but don't really know how to use that.

I'm sure I'll think of other things, but these are the types of tech issues I struggle with.

1) HEIC compresses even more than JPG does.

2) On our iPhones when I back-up pics to my computer they already are JPGs (or MOVs for movies or AAE files for 'live' photos), so I suspect you set some switch along the way to save space, but dunno if that's it or where that may be.

3) You have to turn on location services and may have to set some other switches specific to sharing with just Terry1234 (vs letting all apps see your location which you may or may not want to do -- I don't let apps see my location -lol). Might be easies just to do some searches online or at Apple community since I suspect many others do that too.

4) Dunno MS OneDrive. If you use Apple's iCloud it just backs them up there non-destructively (would be craze for them to do otherwise) but dunno about OneDrive. I don't use either. I've turned off having Apple send photos to the cloud because you fill up the 5G (or whatever allocation) pretty quickly and then they try to sell you more -- the whole idea. So I turn off sending photos to iCloud but let them back-up contacts, messages, etc. so easy to transition to another phone in the future.

I then back-up photos directly to my computer to a back-up folder (and also to my NAS drive, like everything else). Just plug a USB to Lightning data cable into your computer. Turn on your iPhone. Plug the Lightning cable in. The iPhone will appear in MyComputer => Apple iPhone =>Internal Storage => DCIM => nnnApple (where the photos are). Then just drag and drop them to whatever folder on your computer.

Is it also called HEIF? My android phone app has a toggle switch to save in HEIF format. Settings gear -> Save Options. Off I assume is JPEG. It also has an option to save both JPEG and raw format files. I only save raw format on my Nikon for two reasons: 1. JPEG does compress so you lose something. If you crank up the quality then you'd just as well save raw in raw or TIFF (raw being better for full range post processing, TIFF is full pixel for pixel uncompressed but uses the camera's post processor.) On my Nikon raw can be post processed on a computer and the image processing tuned from what the camera does. New cell phone cameras (and I suspect, cameras in general) are much more advanced about what they get and save then cameras of even a few years ago. Frankly, I'm amazed at the quality of images from iPhones. Everyone uses the same sensors but Apple must have raided the software guys from Nikon or Canon sometime along the line.

PS. What kind of phone?

Some let you save JPEG and Raw. The disadvantage of having to pick one is that, if you pick Raw, while all the 'info' is in the image, it is visually quite sub-optimized -- it's raw! So you have to process each one (which can be fun) or create a set of general processing rules (in Adobe or other) to apply to all photos and then save them elsewhere in a non-compressed format (like TIFF). On a quality 35M digital camera (most let you save both raw and a processed format, whether JPEG or other) it makes a lot of sense to tweak the raw images yourself. On a cell phone it may not be worth the hassles given the actual physical lens & sensor is so much poorer (tho quite good) and since the built-in JPEG post processing is really excellent these days because phone processors and OSs are now quite powerful so the resulting .JPG image is far better than the raw image even though the raw data is then gone.

#3 - Simply use your Find My Friends app on the phone and Terry and you accept each other and bammo, you can see where each other are. My wife and myself and a couple good friends are on it. Then you always can see where the party is happening.

Our neighbor uses something similar to keep track of his daughter.

OneDrive backs up (and makes access available remotely) not only Mac stuff, but PC stuff too...don't think icloud will back up my PC files.

If I want to send 10 photos to my brother in an email, the HEIC files that my iphone takes are 3 MB each...takes up too much space, so I compress them...time consuming. I need to adjust a setting if possible.

iphone 8s

I just found out how to get the iphone to save in jpeg mode....go to Settings, Camera, Formats, then select "most compatible". It defaults to the HEIC because it is considered the most efficient (not sure what they consider efficient). I got that fixed now!

When I go to the app store, there are about 20 different "find my friends" apps...which one is trustworthy?
I need a pic of their icon and a FULL name of the app to get the right one.

Edit: Just read this article...they say "find my friends" is no longer, they killed it with iOS 13. It has been replaced with a utility called "Find My". Just loaded it...will see if it works for us.

Yup, understand.

Correct. I just let iCloud back up system, messages and contacts.
