Took some photos today of the USS Forrestal leaving Newport, RI for the last time. She is heading down to Philadelphia for clean up in order to be turned into a scuba divers reef.

Lots of history on USS Forrestal.

I've never understood why they can't scrap metal the whole rig rather than simply sinking it. Seems like maybe some niche car maker could build custom car bodies from the steel..........tell me there wouldn't be buyers of them with the history of the rig.

If you sink her and turn her into a scuba reef, people (divers) will still be able to enjoy her for years to come. When you cut her up for scrap she is gone.

I wish that they had turned it over to someone to make a museum out of her. There was a group down here that tried, but was rejected.

The Discovery channel has a show on what is involved turning a ship into an artificial reef. They documented USS Oriskany going through the process including her sinking.

Very interesting & meticulous process including the sinking portion since they want her to rest on the bottom in a certain way.

So what you're saying is tax dollars spent in a way that does not benefit the majority of folks where as they could make money by scrapping it instead. Do they sink them in a place that has a material impact on the shorline (maybe they could sink it off Chatham on Cape Cod to help quell the erosion that is slowly turning the outer Cape into an island. ?

I'm not certain where the money comes from to do this task, but they do get a lot of stuff out of them for recycling before they sink them. Just about anything not directly tied to keeping the entire ship afloat is removed & sold as scrap. They do a huge amount of environmental impact studies as to where to put them where they'll do the most benefit.

All the copper wiring (miles of it) will probably pay all the costs of towing her out to see and making her a reef. Your right JD they remove everything that is not part of the structure. I saw them do this on one of my old ships before we sank her. The term gutted comes to mind when thinking about it.

I was assigned to the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in the mid to late 90s. As an officer, I was required to qualify as Command Duty Officer. During my first under-instruction watch, there was a fire reported aboard the USS Oriskany which was moth-balled in the shipyard. At that point in time, it was literally covered in bird crap and had very limited power on the ship. We responded to the fire and met the Shipyard Fire Department at the ship. It was obvious to the Fire Chief that I was a "UI" watch and we entered the ship. About 4 decks down, he decided I needed some practical training and ordered his crew to turn their head lamps off. Man was it dark down there. No light what so ever. This is when my Boy Scout training and being prepared paid off as I reached for my trusty flashlight on my belt and asked if they had some problems. I think the Fire Chief was a little disappointed. I'm sure this was not the first time he used this trick on a new Watch Officer but it might have been the first time that someone was prepared.

Not long after that, the decision was made to make the Oriskany an artificial reef and the shipyard began the task of removing all of the hazardous material from the ship in preparation for sinking her. Here is a link of the video showing when she was sunk.

NAVSEA, whom I work for funds the sinking of vessels. Everyone is correct in their statements. All hazmat is removed, reusable material removed, wiring removed. Certain spaces are strategically sealed to aid in the sinking. Charges are set on the saltwater suction manifolds and cameras are placed to monitor. The vids help in future training in damage control. Using the ships for reefs serves many purposes, most importantly helping to stabilize the shoreline. They are set at such an angle to be able to minimize shoreline shifting while allowing divers to safely navigate thru the ship. The ships movement while at rest is also monitored over the years to ensure it's doing what was expected.

So, let me get this straight.

You used to work for the navy who wants to keep ships afloat,

And now you work for somebody who want to sink ships

I guess your both right....but I work for a diff dept within NAVSEA. I mainly do modernization upgrades on destroyers and frigates on engineering and combat systems equipment. I'm actually involved in a new system design prototype install on a destroyer in 12' that will save fuel costs by 9%. it's a sweet piece.
