Welding is an awesome skill to have! I can only do MIG welding...which is fairly easy to learn. But arc or TIG welding is a serious art form. Great job!

Ceiling winch mount? Taking a top off of a Bronco or Jeep?
I’ve gotten reasonably good at mig, but I don’t trust my welds for something important such as a suspension mod or a true safety type job.
Like building an overhead winch mount :look:

Crank the heat in the garage to 90, paint, open door for a min with fan on to get rid of the over spray...
Paint was dry when I took the picture... It was 65F outside...
Snow is slowly melting...

Had to remove the side from the crate that my old 302 DZ engine is from the Camaro. I'm trying to find out how much it's worth and potentially sell it. The DZ engines are quite rare and it may be worth a few thousand. I am checking with the US foremost authority on 1969 Z28s...he "wrote the book". He wanted some photos, so I had to uncrate the engine and take them...took me a couple hours, engine is dirty, had to clean some areas with toothbrush and so on.

Started rebuilding the third block for the Cadillac, the original one was warped from overheating too many times, the second one turned out to be a 500 instead of a 472. This is a 472 out of a running car but as we found out when tearing down the motor it was not going to be running much longer. I have been on this project for well over a year with many unexpected delays. It felt good to make some progress today.
I had the block heat soaked and surfaced, that machinist painted the block Black. The heads I had redone and were painted for the second build. Eventually it will all once again be painted Cadillac Blue.

So last weekend I decided it was time to put away the swimming pool cover. The cover is essentially blue bubble wrap. The companies that make it think very highly of it and charge accordingly.
The stuff lays on the pool to warm it up and it also helps with some evaporation. When it's not on the water it's rolled up on a spool. The problem is that when it is rolled up the sunlight superheats the inside of the roll and the plastic gets brittle. The first few of these I tried to put in the shade on the reel but that didn't work and I could only get barely two seasons out of a product with a 5 year warranty.
So I started disconnecting it from the reel and putting the whole cover in the garage. To do that I unroll it on the driveway and let the sun dry it. It's a multi step process where I start on one sice and flip it over. The thing absorbs so much heat that it's too hot to touch so this time I decided to speed the process and use my leaf blower to help dry it.
Got the thing out of the shed. Haven't used it for three or 4 years. (It's actually a blower/vac, and I used the vac in Colorado during spring cleanup.)
Put some gas in it, put the choke on and it started right up. Bad omen to start - the choke handle broke when I was putting it back...
Then I noticed gas was leaking.
I thought it was the fuel tank so last night I disassembled it and could see that there was no leaking from the tank. But then I just slightly bent one of the fuel lines and it snapped. The return line was broken off at the tank. Took some stuff off and got the tank out. Inside the tank the line is broken too. It broke both source and return lines right at the tank. It uses a soft fuel line that feeds through the tank and friction fits to seal.
No auto place carries such fuel line. Suggested I go to Lowes. Lo and behold they do have exactly the "repair kit" but the lines aren't the right size. It turns out that mine is a Ryobi (Homelight) which is Home Depot. Go over there and they have a complete fuel restore kit which includes the primer bubble and a new fuel filter... Lines are a bear to get through the tank side but once in match up. The return line is a soft rubber line like the originals were, but the source line is a stiffer clear plastic.
There was a small engine repair parts place that had the raw fuel line. They wanted a little over $2.00 for the two I'd need but then charged $8.00 for shipping. Amazon had them for $8 ea (with free shipping). So the rebuild kit was a good deal since the primer bulb would probably fail anyway.

Had to replace the battery in my Dad's Ferrari again... It died 5 months after the Three year warranty... he bought the last one from the dealership and they charged him 850 bucks for it...
It was an ODYSSEY-AGM49 H8 L5, that I can order online for $359.93 CAD...
https://odysseybattery.ca/product/odp-agm49-h8-l5-49-950/
So, 49 H8 L5...
MOTOMASTER ELIMINATOR AGM Group Size 49 (H8/L5) Battery $280.99... With a Five year warranty... It has 100 less CCA than the Odyssey, but that's no biggie, car doesn't see cold weather... Plus it was in stock at the store!! No shipping charges!!
https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/motomaster-eliminator-agm-group-size-49-h8-l5-battery-850-cca-0104920p.html

Also going to replace the Ferrari Ctek that came with the car, it is for lead acid batteries, and charges around 14.3 -14.4V... AGM batteries like 14.7V, the new Cteks have a mode for AGM batteries... Had to order an adapter to be able to plug a new Ctek into the cars existing 4 pin plug...

Ford did the same thing on the GT. Wanted somewhere close to 500 for an odyssey grp 25 backordered that I got in stock from O'Reillys for under 200. Exactly the same battery except for the label that ford sticks OVER the factory label.
I loved the car but don't regret selling it. Simply got too expensive to maintain. At least you can get parts for any old ferrari or Mercedes.
Did I tell you about the 500+ oil change?
Lots of people complain about the new Odysseys. Mine lasted 7 years. It was on maintainer all the time. It never really died but the telltale gauge lapses were the sign that it was on its last leg.

Got the last part today - the choke lever. Cleaned a little grime from the carb and surrounding area and put some gas in it, pumped the primer and the thing sparked on the first pull and started on the second.
Blew a little dirt out of the garage and **** if it wasn't still leaking gas. I thought it was all coming from the disintegrated fuel lines but no....
Pulled the tank and put some gas to fill it up and could see it was weeping from a crack in the rear part of the tank.
Read about stuff and pretty much the method that seems to get the most traction is to simply use a hot soldering iron to melt a valley at the crack and and "weld" some of the surrounding surface back in to the valley. Seemed to work. Don't know how long it will last since vibration is the culprit to begin with. The blower is a Ryobi but is available in identical versions from Homelite and Toro. None have a replacement gas tank - all say discontinued, and there aren't even any on eBay.
Meanwhile when I was getting the fuel line repair kit I noticed that Home Depot had only battery operated lawn tools. No more gas powered units were on the display area. Vegas is following California. Dirtbags.

Just looked online for our area, they have about a 40/60 split on gas vs electric mowers listed. Although honestly if I was still cutting the hill at the house in Pittsburgh I would prefer to have an electric so I didn't have to be limited on the direction I would have to use to cut it. An electric can go on any angle without caring.

I see a pattern with you and gas tanks. :haha:
All this talk about lawn equipment going electric makes me think I should buy a backup yard blower and trimmer in gas.
We just replaced our 25 year old Toro push mowers w a new one a year or two ago so they are good as long as we live here. Also bought a small riding mower for CoPilot, but our trimmer is about 5 years old and blower about 4. Say those last another 5 years, by that time may not be able to get gas equipment. :rollingpin:

In Pittsburgh, moved the Harley from the basement to the garage only it wouldn't turn over well. I keep it on a Battery Tender and I never have this issue. So I decided to look more into it and the first thing I saw was the date on the battery, 07/2016, well it was time to get a new battery. Now it runs great.

Old memory cells are coming back. I now remember doing it after the Hotsy with just a lawn sprayer (not high pressure, it concerned me). You know, the kind you use to spray weeds on the end of the hose. I used some "green" soapy stuff but can't remember what it's called but would recognize it if I saw it. I let it sit for a couple of hours then rinsed off, trying to keep water from obvious electrical things and then blew it dry with my leaf blower (which I just fixed). I also recall disconnecting the battery at the beginning.
It just came back to me when I read that label. It's like remembering my 5th birthday :)

After I'm all done cleaning ours, I put this in a garden sprayer (dilute it about 2-1) and just give a quick spray...shines things up a bit.

When I was an auto tech in the mid '80s, I changed about 3 of those a week...got really good at it. In the beginning we would rebuild the CV joint, but after a few years of the FWD companies started making entire replacement shafts like you show...and they were only about $99 at that time....I'd swap one out in less than an hour. The hardest part was separating the lower ball joint on some, and there were a few cars that had a tricky snap ring inside the transaxle that you'd have to take out...real PIA. Rebuilding a CV joint is a tricky piece of work, getting all balls back in properly and all. And I have (still have it) a special tool for crimping the metal bands around the CV joint housing after the boot was replaced. We used to tease the new technicians by telling them that the grease inside CV joints was special...came from sperm whale oil and was very rare...lol.

Changed the ground battery cable on the Camaro...the wire was coming out of the molded end terminal. Easy fix...the hardest part was figuring out how to route the new cable to make it look all neat and tidy, as it was about 5" longer than the old cable. No pics.

6 years sounds like a good life if it’s a standard motorcycle/power sports battery.

I have one of those crimping tools,
30310Yep, looks familiar lol. Those crimpers work great. Depending on the application, sometimes you need to get an alignment after. On some cars it's easier to remove the lower ball joint to get the shaft out...and in that case its location is positively identified by the joint tapered fitting, and therefore an alignment is not needed. But on others, you have to remove the two bolts holding the upper strut mount...and there can be some slop in those joints and you can really mess up the alignment. In that case, I'd scribe the metal with an awl to create "witness marks" and try to put back in that position, but then I'd also suggest an alignment to the customer...doesn't take much of an alignment error to cause tire wear.
