To start at the top of the food chain hands down is….

Triumphs “Fight The Good Fight”

Been one of my all time favorites since I was a teenager. Just seems to resonate through my life.

Under that what do you have? Favorite lines in a song?

My second that always comes to mind is The Cars, All I Can Do

One too many times
I twisted the gate
When I was crazy
I thought you were great

I usually associate this kind of question with my "Sad Songs" list (although not all of them are sad) which I think had a topic in one of the predecessors of this forum. There are so many songs that I didn't really care for with the music and then I actually listened to the lyrics.

I'm sure if I went through the list I'd pick out a few lines that matter but for now just the whole song's "poem".

The first time it happened was when I was on my first road trip, driving across Texas on the way back from Phoenix to Iowa. Elton John's Daniel was at the top of the charts and it seemed no matter what station I was listening to it would be on the air at least once an hour... Somewhere I wasn't paying any attention to anything except the lyrics and Bernie Taupin's poem smacked me up the side of the head...

Hurt (Johnny Cash version)

What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know goes away
In the end

Hotel California (just a great song on the happy side :) )

Comfortably Numb

Almost anything by Jim Steinman (Meat Loaf, Pat Benetar)

When Doves Cry (Prince)

Maybe I'm just too demanding
Maybe I'm just like my father, too bold
Maybe you're just like my mother
She's never satisfied (she's never satisfied)
Why do we scream at each other?
This is what it sounds like
When doves cry

Edge of Seventeen

You and Me (Alice Cooper)

But you and me ain't no movie stars
What we are is what we are

Ballad of Ira Hayes

Call him drunken Ira Hayes
He won't answer anymore
Not the whiskey drinking Indian
Or the marine that went to war
It irked me that Clint Eastwood's movie Flags of our Fathers didn't use this song at the final credits.

Key Largo

We had it all
Just like Bogie and Bacall

The Three Bells

These are the ones I can think of right now. I'm sure more will blink into consciousness tonight while I'm staring at the ceiling at 3AM.

Lol

A couple of those I will have to look up.

Since this was about lyrics, not songs, were there specific lyrics that stand out?

As I said, these are on my list because of the lyrics. Not just a few lines (although some are known for only that) but the whole "poem". Subtract the music, just read the words.

Eagles, "Already Gone"

So often times it happens that we live our lives in chains
And we never even know we have the key

This always hit home with me.

Watching an old Monk with laptop on lap so I'll go back to the song lyrics of a few and edit in a few sound bites... This will require you to read back and the edits will not be all at once.

The sun in your eyes
made some of the lies worth believing

....

I am the maker of rules
Dealing with fools
I can cheat you blind

- Alan Parsons Project, Eye In The Sky
One of the best "break up" songs... This song has been stuck in my head for the past few days.

One of the best "break up" songs...

This reminded me of the theme in general. You can google "best breakup songs" and there is some overlap among the lists, but nearly all of them omit who I think had the list of the most emotional breakup songs:

ABBA

Here I have to go with the entire song as a poem for the lyrics because while there are some memorable lines in all of them, you have to take in the whole song to really get the impact.

1. Winner Takes It All
2. Knowing Me, Knowing You
3. One of Us
4. When All Is Said And Done
5. Fernando

And others that weave the theme.

ABBA sure spent a lot of time and energy breaking up. There were two couples so split in half.

I had recorded the Billy Joel 100th Madison Square Garden, and didn't know if our Pacific time zone version got clipped so I recorded it again last Friday. But instead of fast forwarding through commercials I watched it commercial free on Paramount streaming.

He has lots of good songs with meaningful lyrics, but because of the controversy on Piano Man I actually listened and read the lyrics. Pretty much a downer song :)

I am looking forward to watching it too. Just haven't had the time yet too.

My wife reminded me we saw him probably in Denver had to be 15 years ago. Songs are memorable but the show wasn't really special.

He'll be in Vegas at the football stadium with sting Nov 9. Tickets aren't atrocious but I'm skeptical about the sound in the end zone

So many times when thinking about how old some artist are these days it is very difficult to even begin to acknowledge that they are possibly in their 80's, but being so many of them were well into their 20's when they became popular in the late 60's and early 70's it truly is where they are these days. What makes it so hard is remembering listening to them on the radio or the record player back then so for them to be that old means I too am older than I want to acknowledge myself.

Great songs of the past.

Harry Chapin had a big hand in starting our area food bank back in the 70’s.

Here’s one in Florida that still bears his name. Great legacy.

I was listening to the radio while changing out some electrical fixtures in the new house and this oldie came on. What's Up by 4 Non Blondes. I loved the music and the "catch" of "what's going on". I took a break and pulled up the Vevo music video.

Once again, you've got to disengage the music and listen carefully to the lyrics.

It is so applicable to "what's going on" right now in the world.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6NXnxTNIWkc&list=RD6NXnxTNIWkc&start_radio=1

I have to say after listening twice I "feel a little peculiar".

BTW, they're not bad looking for not being blondes.
