I received the catalog for the Mecum auction in Kissimmee in January, it has 19 private collections included in it.

This seems to have become a growing trend at these large auctions. I am wondering if the cost of maintaining a place for all of their cars has gotten to be more than they are willing to spend, the owner has deceased and the family is clearing the collections, they are too old to care for the collection or appreciated it or have they realized they got in over their head with the desire to buy buy buy and now they need to sell.

I suspect that any or all of those and others are reasons to liquidate. I do suspect the "standing still" costs are getting out of hand. Insuring a large collection is very costly.

The big liquidations started when Ron Pratt sold everything. Barrett Jackson had two auctions that period - one to do the farm style everything goes for Pratte's barn and the other for the regular Scottsdale auction. It went on for almost two weeks. Pratt's stuff not only included his cars but a big collection of signs and stuff. Like I said, down to the bare wells. Like the old farm estate sale.
