Long story short, I have the opportunity to buy a classic car from a friend of a friend who lives in Canada. The car right now is physically located in Arizona at the guys summer house but it is registered in Canada. He and I are trying to avoid him having to take it back to Canada just so he can export it back to the US so I can buy it. My plan was to have a transport company pick it up in Arizona and have it shipped back to me in NY and then go the JFK Airport, which is the closest U.S. Customs Point of Entry, and have all the documents taken care of there. Unfortunately, from what I'm reading, it may be illegal for him to sell me the car without him first exporting the car out of Canada.
Anyone have any insight on this?

Call customs?
I plan to. From what I'm reading, I or he may need to use a Customs Broker. They handle all the paperwork, for a fee of course.

Where did he buy the car? That may make a difference on how you proceed.

Sorry, can't help. I did buy a used car from another state once and even that was a bit tricky...can't imagine from another country.

Selling your Canadian vehicle in the US will require finding a US buyer. You can find one using ads and listing your car for sale on the right online platforms. This also means more work for you. You’ll have to provide the buyer with accurate information, show them the car, answer questions, bargain with them, and help them with the importation process if there’s an agreement. There’s surely a lot of work for you in this. But if you find the right buyer, it might be worth the hassle.
The other option would be to drive your car into the US and sell it. You don’t need to live in the US to do this. But you need to have a driver’s license, registration, and insurance. You also need to make sure you don’t sell too many cars during the period as this might amount to work. In this case, your intention for bringing the car into the US must not be to deliver it to a buyer, or you’ll need a business visa.

Car doesn't have to come back to Canada to sell it to you... Just need all the proper paperwork... It will also be easier because the Car originally came from the USA...
