    Re: Electrical Question Thread

Finally found this. Now to find a plug end.

    And hope this is safe.

If I used the other outlet Tony suggested, I can’t find how to wire it.

I won’t be using the welder at any limits, but I don’t want to hurt the generator either.

I'm not talking about using adapters. Dryer and ranges come without a power cord for this reason. So do dishwashers and garbage disposals. Not only can you use a power cord that matches your socket config but you can also direct wire. The power pigtail is connected inside a box on the appliance. The question is whether your welder has a built-in cord or a replaceable cord. If it's permanently attached then a gender changer is appropriate. The thing is that your plug says it's a 50A device whereas you said it was 20A.

What are the current ratings on the sockets on the generator? They should say.
    Cheers.

You may need something like this.

I think that should work ...good price too!

I think you are confused about one thing if I’m reading right? The welder is 20 amp, not 50 amp. And the picture is of the 50 amp socket I want to put a plug in.

So my welder is 220v 20 amp and I will plug it into it’s extension cord. One end of the extension cord is three bare wires that I need to put a plug on.

I “think” the welder is wired up, but don’t know if it can be retired .... I’m looking for something cheap like a plug because I’m thinking this may be the last job I’m using the welder for.

    Maybe just something like this...

The picture of the plug looks like a 50a plug. That's what I find confusing.

You should not cut off the three prong plug and replace it with a 4 prong. There will not be a ground/ bare wire in the cable. The 4 prong needs black red white green. Your cable has only red black white.

The adapter dongle is the safest way. It will split the white into ground neutral but they are connected in the panel. Putting a 4 prong plug on the three wire welder power will eventually mislead someone into thinking it has separate ground and neutral which it does not.

The 4th wire is an equipment ground....read the below about dryers and see if you can adapt to your application. Probably need to remove the shunt in the welder and instead hook up the equipment ground to the 4th wire.

    Re: Electrical Question Thread

Just read Tony’s last post....I agree....don’t add a 4 prong plug to a wire with only 3 conductors. I’m curios what’s inside that adapter dongle...I think best would be to retire welder...but I’m no electrician. Highwayman may have good answer.

The welder is perfectly OK. The pigtail will do what is needed with no misleading effects. If the power cord can be replaced because it's terminated in a captive j box that might be cheaper. The thing that puzzles me is why there is a 50a plug cable on a 20a unit.

Ah. I got it. Was that yours from New? Did a previous owner put a 50a cord on a 20a unit because he only had a 50a socket???

Overanakyzing. Just get the pigtail adapter
    Cheers.

That plug is factory on my welder. Here is a pic of where I got the 230v 20 amp input.

I am not replacing the plug on the welder.

I have two extension cords made for the welder.

One of those has no plug wired on one end. I simply want to put a plug on that end to go to my generator to weld up something I can’t get close to the house to weld using my normal house plug.

Nothing on the welder or generator is being changed. I simply need a male plug and wiring diagram to connect my 3 wire extension cord to my generator without buying an expensive one time use pairing dongle.

I bought the welder new in the 90’s. The plug is what came on it.
