Wow, it looks like BJ hit a home run by having this auction in Houston. I'm watching it a day deferred - so right now I have on in my background mode. It's playing while I watch other stuff and when I see a docket number I care about I turn the sound up.

Conclusion in the first hour's of the docket is that the prices for the first day are incredibly higher than the other auctions. Crazy high. A VW dune buggy just went for 27K.

The other thing is that they seem to be giving cars more time on the block. I haven't taken a stop watch to things yet but it feels like close to 4 minutes on average vs. the old 3 minutes. More time hopes for more $$$.

Yeah. I was watching last night and a well-used but clean 1980 Japan-domestic Datsun sold for $8K. I figured $2-3K. Actually I was surprised BJ even gave it runway time and they were generous. Then again that was Thursday evening.

I can confirm from my sale that BJ schedules according to the following algorithm:

cars are given a day by the amount they expect the car to sell for. Thus cars on the first day should sell for less than day 2 and day 2 should be less than day 3.

Within a day the same rules apply: Lower prices earlier in the day capping out with the dinner time (local time) offerings.

For three day (Thu-Sat) auctions, Friday night will be the big seller, some on Sat PM.

For 4 day, Friday night will have some "showcase" cars, but the big sellers will go on Saturday. Lower expectations return also after the prime time is over usually by about 9:00-10:00.

Scottsdale has a Sunday AM-early afternoon slot that returns to first day or two pricing. But by that time the gallery is almost empty so the perceived value by BJ of a Sunday car is less than day 1.
