DeWalt Brushless stuff is great!

If you're getting rid of the "China Stuff", you better bin that Torque Wrench too.

I actually like the Mastercraft Tools, yeah they are offshore, but if you break one, you just walk into Canadian Tire and get a new one for free, no waiting for the Tool (Matco, Snap On, Et Al) Truck to come by. I have actually only broken a few mastercraft sockets and drill bits, all the other stuff has held up fine, most of my tools are Craftsman though.

Serpentine belt kit,

I was using a friends Snap On end wrenches one day and i find them to thin and hard to hold on to when they get oily. They are quality for sure but i prefer a thicker wrench. They are expensive and you have to chase down the truck to replace a tool. I get all my tools at Sears.

I would say 75 percent of my handtools are Sears Craftsman. That has been my first choice since I got my stone hammer all those many years ago. Good value for the money. I have bought some of the cheap Harbor Freight stuff to just carry in the car or the cut up and make a special tool. Never bought Snap-on since it was too pricey for me.

I think their business model no longer works ...too many more-focussed stores competing with them on a department-by-department basis ...and with better deals. Funny thing about Sears is that virtually everyting you go to buy there has been tweaked to be unique to Sears so you can never exercise a 'price guarantee' -- even when it's obvious that it's a product sold widely elsewhere. But if you tell them you want it cheaper and start to walk, they usually will do it b/c many of their sales people are commissioned. It's like the price on many items doesn't matter :rofl3: ...except for their tools and some appliances most of what they sell is sort of junky and tools and appliances can now be had elsewhere for less.

Too many departments to be profitable with the increased competition over the decades. Montgomery Ward, and JC Penny both suffered the same problems. Wards is gone and Pennys still isn't doing that great. K-Mart has a similar model and isn't healthy either.

Yup. Wards went belly-up around 2000, I think. JCP recently slashed (and contines to slash) about 30% of their stores. K-Mart I never quite understood -- they buy Sears in bankruptcy and finance it by liquidating many/most of the K-Mart stores -- but only about 20% of the Sears stores are closed (because it was a real estate game) and the Sears name now dominates the enterprise. I always figured folks just confused the name K-Mart with the name Walmart else they'd be gone too -lol. Monkey Wards and Sears were CEO'd by brothers for many years -- some of their best years, actually, but not necessarily because they were especially competant. :nonono: Meanwhile Walmart prospered for decades under the outstanding management beliefs of Sam Walton (worth billions but still driving his '70s Dodge Dart "because it still runs") and is still doing very well after Sam's demise -- no one gets commissions, everyone has a 'team' spirit, prices are always the best (tho many customers are umm 'goofy' lol) -- but skilled management done in the tradition of old man Sam's 'family' atmosphere somehow prevails -- rather stunning since, busines model-wise, it's not all that different than the others -- just managed excellently.

Shelby-Don
10-03-2015, 02:19 AM
Current day Walmart is not the Walmart of ole, since Sam's passing they have used their mega-bucks to put the mom and pop stores and suppliers out of business. I know beating your competition is part of business but Sam knew it was important to coexist with his neighboring stores. After Sam's passing Walmart frequently went into new markets with extremely low prices putting surrounding competitors out of business only to raise prices above those same competitors price once they were gone. There are also many stories where Walmart uses their size and clout to bully their suppliers, forcing them to lower prices and to provide merchandise on consignment only to break the supplier by not paying or forcing them to take product back if the merchandise didn't sell during the season. Walmart has a relatively little cash tied up in merchandise or real estate, most of the inventory is obtained on consignment and their stores for the most part are leased.

Carnut
10-03-2015, 02:59 AM
Walmart is pretty tough on some of it's suppliers. They squeeze them pretty tight, many end up saying no mas because they can't make any money. And you're right, they devastate the retailers in small town when they move in. Once mom and pop are out, up go the prices and down go the premium wages. People living there could say no but they won't because they are going to shop where prices are cheaper.

Years ago, I had a chance to provide services to them. I couldn't afford to and still do a responsible job.

68fastback
10-03-2015, 03:21 AM
Sounds like the stories I've read in the press a lot but which I don't believe for a minute based on years of analyzing many corporations, successful and failed. While I agree they are not the same company as when Sam was alive (much of the 'family' has drained away and they are only now re-realizing the value in that), their prices are identical in all stores nationwide (and effectively online-too), so not possible to change prices once in a new area unless all stores change, etc. There are some exceptions tho, just like HD and Lowes, when they first open they do offer specialty items/prices to induce traffic -- essential to effect a shopping pattern change -- but after that pricing is quite consistent.

No supplier has to sell to Walmart -- they do to make money. The stories of them crushing a supplier on price after agreeing to a contract price are patently bogus, imho, UNLESS the supplier is offering a better deal elsewhere which Walmart will not tolerate (it's in the contract) -- nor should they since no one offers a supplier more reach and range. If Walmart demads a price that's too low on a supplier's break-in attempt, they can stick to their price and risk not breaking-in --supplier's decision -- and losing the opportunity of Walmart's business. Someone else will gladly meet that price if they can and that's somewhat differnt than Sam's approach but I don't see anything wrong with it whatsoever. The key is to have unique, clever, and 'protected' products to offer Walmart so another supplier can't really undecut you on the same item because they can't make the same item -- such savy suppliers become very wealthy in their relationships with Walmart and, in return, are treated exceptionally well b/c Walmart also wants unique, clever and 'protected' product too for obvious reasons.

I think what is missed sometimes is that when a Walmart comes to town local businesses must change how they sell and maybe even what they sell to some extent. A higher price with hand-holding and an intimate knowledge of the product can well prevail over price alone -- I see it all the time. We had Home Depot, Lowes and Walmart come to town all within two years of one another yet the local ACE and True-Value stores in all the neighboring villages are still doing very well -- similar products but ACE and True Value doesn't compete on price (except maybe on draw-in circulars), they compete on one-on-one excellent sales-service.

Auto suppliers do the same thing as Walmart in regards to pushing for every last 1/10 of a cent on commodity type items and pushing defect costs 100% back to the suppliers, but that's a it shold be, imo. Ford will not buy a sparkplug for once cent more than GM (for the same exact plug which is one reason why they usually aren't the same -lol), just like Walmart will not pay once cent more than anyone on a commodity food item -- like margarine or whatever -- even from the largest national suppliers.

The way a smaller supplier competes in such an environment is with technology and differentiation/specialization. At Ford and GM we see it all the time -- jockeying for advanced-tech suppliers with a specialized sensor or subassembly/technology or whatever that enables a key differentiating feature and then nego'g an exclusive for a couple years.

Frankly, I think Walmart is one of the most misunderstood companies. Their supplier selection process is downright rigorous. They often interact with literally dozens of suppliers -- each on dozens of products -- before choosing a single new one ...or none, if none are deemed good enough in their opinion to turn the volumes to make it worth their while (they are a large machine that can't even get primed on a small flow). Walmart can hardly be blamed for the fact that so many would-be suppliers happily line up at their door and price can be entirely secondary to selection when something is new and differentiated and Walmart certainly excells on insightful selection, imo, and often propel such suppliers to great prosperity. I haven't seen any small village stores here go belly up because of Walmart either -- they just avoid competing on the exact same product, which would be truly silly, unless it's the type of product for which handholding and one-on-one care matters a lot (as mentioned earlier).

Even Toys-R-Us has survived. While they are a large chain and sell some products the same as Walmart the are not as cheap on most (again, largely commodity items) and Toys-R-Us have been forced to 'wake-up,' seek out, and get better at the product selection process (again, Walmart's true specialty). I'm not saying no one is hurt by Walmart's business model and excellence in execution, but those are most often as it should be, imo.

I actually don't deem any of Walmart's practices as predatory (as often characterized by the talking-heads on TV and unlike some other large corporations I've mentioned the past that are lauded by the same media tho far MORE predatory -lol) and there's no reason someone like Sears could not do what Walmart does, except for the fact that Sears has gotten lazy and fat, and any real talent they one had in their buyer community has either left for greener pastures or literally died off -- most of their buyers and middle management are talentless hacks that operate more like a government agency than a competitive business -- i.e. it's just a job not a passion to excell -- they collect a paycheck and simply no longer care from middle-management on down. There are always exceptions, but Sears used to have that passion and drive from WW-II thru the 60s/early 70s but it has slowly drained away as bureaucracy and complacency replaced drive and passion. They have become the poster child of poor business management clinging on a reputation justly earned in tools and appliance -- but decades ago back when they were managd like the clockwork organization Walmart is today .Jmho.

Funny thing is I rarely shop at Walmart too. Little items I'll buy wherever locally or online. Bigger purchases I'll consider Walmart but they rarely have the best offering -- it's usually the n-1 (or n-2) offering at a superb price, but if you want the latest, they likely won't even have it, unless it's a commodity item in which case they will have it at the best price or will match it.

In a free market economy any shops in a community that go belly up eventually get replaced by ones that are better managed and that almost surely involve more specialization -- I like that! One could make the argument that it's a bad thing that we no longer have as many fruit and veg stores, meat markets, milk delivery, etc because supermarkets put them all out of business (or did they?). But now we have local businesses that compete with specialization -- what you generally can't get in the average supermarket whether because of specific brand or quality, so now there are many more specialty cheese shops, specialty meat markets, natural/organic food stores, etc (and lots of fru-fru crap too -lol-) and the specialty stores seem to do very well -- a trend that has not gone unnoticed by comapanies like Whole Foods who are essentially aggregating and up-scaling specialty product as the basis of a more finely-honed specialty supermarket business model to leapfrog the local trend (surely that is evil ...not!)

Such change is, on balance, always a good thing in the long term since it is the essence of being able to more finely satisfy customer demand -- which includes product, price, mix, and ambiance (among other considerations) -- and such durable and continual tracking and tuning to the shifting patterns of demand is both the benefit and the hallmark of a free market economy -- unmolested by government 'pushes' and 'tweaks' that can never be truly durable by their very nature.

In fact, it is the hallmark of what made this country great and enabled us to be victorious and free in surviving and coming out of WW-II. The great advancements -- even at Aberdeen proving grounds -- were largely driven by private invention initiated mostly in private laboratories and then tactically focussed by the war effort into war-oriented capabilities like true balistics measurement (the ballistic chronograph) and radar (that was 50%+ better than the Germans), even ultrasound (all 3 of those came out of the Loomis Lab in Tuxedo Park NY), etc. Few understand that because history was frustrated by secrecy. Even the H-bomb's fission was conceived in the private sector -- by Einstein's genius but actually stimulated by small-scale private investment in fission experimentation long prior to the bomb -- the gov being instrumental in coalescing those private efforts into one focussed on the War and which ultimately saved an estimaed 2 million lives. It was Einstein being coaxed, once again, by private laboratory experimentation he was exposed to, that caused him to recommend building a fissile device to the POTUS -- which instigated the government's H-bomb efforts.

In contrast, Russia and China has always driven ideas top-down and it is the primary reason that socialist and communist societies can't compete with free-market thinking -- when the free market's creativity is actually permitted to remain self-actualized in the mind, spirit and self-determination of free peoples. This has not gone unnoticed by those regimes who are now attempting to hybridize self-driven experimentation under the umbrella of communist protection ...so far not working very well. For example, even after 20 years of seeing US companie make cars in China their smartest minds still haven't figured out how to reverse engineer and mnufacture their own sensors that would permit their cars to even come close to meeting US emiions standards -- essential to break into the US market since no US, German, Japanese, S.Korean, etc companies will share the technology with China who can't wait to do to the US auto industry what they did with electronics. Japan understands this all too well since it was they who first did it to us. Unfortunately, as more and more overbearing government controls are put on everything here we are in fact scaring away creativity and moving as a society in that same direction somewhat -- and that will surly hurt us -- political speak aside.

If we lose sight of the great American company, whether high-tech or not -- as an effective bastion and even a laboratory of American self-actualization facilitaated by a free-enterprize system that is still the envy of the world -- then we run the very real risk of permitting our government to fuc& with it (as is happening now) in ways that are essentially unreverseable (the 51% gimme problem) and paying a huge, and likely devastating, price (and not just a financial one) that our children and grandchildren will curse us for -- if they are pemitted to still read and speak freely ...and experience the truth about how excellence (which is inherently independent of government) is actually achieved.

Surely we need government in some form to protect the nation so that the free-enterprise process can prosper, but it's what we let government do, and prohibit it from doing, that is key. Oh, wait we already have that wisdom all written-down in a marvelous game-changing document that verily defines free-enterprise -- for 228 years now --doh!

They make a vibration pad with rubber on both sides and cork in the middle. We used it all the time under all sorts of equipmenthttp://www.amazon.com/Pack-Anti-Vibration-Rubber-isolation/dp/B001THXRP8.
You may like the blue ones on the page better. You can poke a hole in them and bolt through them to the floor.

Mine is still attached w a dense rubber pad under it. Not bolted down to reduce vibration. I also have sound deadening on the sides facing the house to help reduce noise.

Those all Snap On?

I'd like that yellow stubby for the work van.

Any idea how much it is?....for a regular guy :(

I hardly see the Snap On guy on car lots I'm at...usually see the Mac Tools guy every week...but....the Snap On guy lives maybe 1/2 mile down the road behind my house. :(

I couldn't imagine how much in debt OCD would be if his Snap On guy lived that close. :spend::spend::spend:http://www.gif-paradies.de/gifs/smilies/2d_einkaufend/einkaufend_smilie_0015.gif

Sold this tool box,

http://stangsunited.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=15215&stc=1

Put an add in kijiji last night and the second guy who replied to it came and picked it up today... Gave me full asking price, didn't even try to haggle!! I could have asked more but I still made 50 bucks on the deal and he got a perfect tool box at a great price!! I paid 600 a few years ago and put it in for 650...

Had a ton of lowballers, lol... About a dozen 400 dollar offers, I would reply, sure, do you want the top or bottom? Ha!!

So with that and some Christmas money, I have a grand to put down on the new box!!

My main tool box cost me around $400 30 years ago and is still going strong. :wtg:

Probably costs $650ish now. :look:

We've been buying Media Space on Kijiji.ca lately. Found out it is basically the Craig's List of Canada.
